Until 1992, Olympic basketball rules restricted competitors to amateurs, a policy that had allowed a Soviet team of professionals in all but name to beat an American team of college players at the controversial 1972 final. Once FIBA changed the eligibility rules, the United States assembled a roster of active NBA stars for the Barcelona Games, including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Karl Malone.
The team, quickly nicknamed the Dream Team, won all eight of its games by an average margin of 44 points, never trailing at any point in any game across the tournament. Opposing national teams, some of whose players had grown up idolising the Americans on their roster, openly asked for photos and autographs before facing them.
Beyond the gold medal, the Dream Team is widely credited with transforming basketball into a genuinely global sport, inspiring a wave of international talent that would reshape the NBA itself within a decade. It remains the standard reference point for total sporting dominance across any Olympic team event.
