The 1966 World Cup final was level at 2-2 when the ninety minutes were up, so extra time it was. In the 101st minute Geoff Hurst hit the underside of the crossbar and the ball came down somewhere around the goal line. Nobody watching agreed on which side of it, then or since. The goal was given.
Hurst scored a third in the last minute, by which point spectators were already coming onto the pitch, prompting Kenneth Wolstenholme's commentary: 'some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over, it is now.' Nobody else has scored a hat-trick in a men's World Cup final.
The England captain Bobby Moore went up the Wembley steps for the Jules Rimet trophy. Six decades on, England have not won another, and the last minutes of that afternoon are still the most-shown football footage in the country.
