Green Bay hosted the Dallas Cowboys for the 1967 NFL Championship at Lambeau Field on 31 December, in a recorded temperature of 13 degrees below zero Fahrenheit and a wind chill estimated between minus 36 and minus 48. The stadium's new underground heating system reportedly failed, the surface froze solid, and the game was the Ice Bowl before it was over.
Dallas led 17-14 late in the fourth quarter. Green Bay set off from their own 32-yard line with no timeouts left, carried downfield largely by fullback Chuck Mercein's runs and catches, and reached the one-yard line with 16 seconds showing. Bart Starr, reckoning his running backs would lose their footing on the ice, kept the ball himself and followed guard Jerry Kramer's block into the end zone.
The 21-17 win gave Vince Lombardi his third straight NFL title and turned out to be his final game on the Packers sideline. Green Bay went on to win Super Bowl II.
