The 1992 Indianapolis 500 was run in cold unusual for May, which left tyres struggling for grip all day and produced a race-record number of caution periods and crashes. One of them eliminated the pole-sitter Roberto Guerrero on the pace laps, before the green flag had even fallen.
At the front, Al Unser Jr. and Scott Goodyear ran nose to tail through the closing laps, trading the lead in traffic before a last-lap duel down the front straight. Unser crossed the line 0.043 seconds ahead of Goodyear.
It made Unser the third member of his family to win the Indianapolis 500, after his father Al Unser Sr. and his uncle Bobby Unser, and the first second-generation winner in the race's history at the time. Whenever a finish anywhere in motorsport gets called close, 0.043 is the number it is held against.
