Statistically the 1960 World Series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees makes very little sense. The Yankees outscored Pittsburgh 55 runs to 27 across the seven games and won three of them by lopsided blowout margins, and it still came down to a deciding Game 7 at Forbes Field.
The game itself lurched about. Pittsburgh led 4-0, fell behind 7-4, and tied it at 9-9 in the eighth. Bill Mazeroski led off the bottom of the ninth against the Yankees pitcher Ralph Terry and hit his second pitch over the left-field wall for a solo home run, ending the series on the spot.
No other World Series has been decided by a walk-off home run in a Game 7, and a team outscored by 28 runs across a series still taking the championship is the sort of line that gets checked twice. Fans came over the walls while Mazeroski was still running, and he rounded the bases waving his helmet above his head.
