Michael Phelps went to the 2008 Beijing Olympics chasing a record Mark Spitz had set in 1972: seven golds at a single Games. He entered eight events and won all eight, several of them by margins measured in fractions of a second.
The narrowest was the 100 metre butterfly. Serbia's Milorad Čavić led for most of it, and Phelps got to the wall with a final half-stroke lunge that took the race by one hundredth of a second. Čavić's camp questioned the result, and underwater camera footage and touchpad data confirmed it.
The medley relay closed out the meet and left him with eight golds from eight finals, most of them set alongside a world or Olympic record. No athlete has taken more from a single Olympic Games, summer or winter.
