No team in Major League Baseball's more than a century of postseason play had ever come back from a three-games-to-none deficit to win a series, and the New York Yankees had the Red Sox in exactly that position after the 2004 ALCS's first three games, the last of them a 19-6 blowout at Fenway Park that appeared to end any doubt.
Boston won Game 4 on a David Ortiz walk-off home run in the twelfth inning, then Game 5 on another Ortiz walk-off hit in the fourteenth, both times facing elimination. Game 6 turned on pitcher Curt Schilling starting on a surgically repaired ankle with blood visibly soaking through his sock, and Boston completed the sweep-back with a 10-3 rout in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium.
The Red Sox became the only team in MLB history to overcome a 3-0 postseason deficit, and they went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, ending an 86-year championship drought that fans had nicknamed the Curse of the Bambino. The ALCS comeback itself is widely regarded as the single greatest comeback in North American professional sports history.
