One-day international cricket had been played since 1971, and across thousands of innings by the sport's greatest players nobody had made 200 in a single match. Sachin Tendulkar, already the format's leading run-scorer, went after the mark against South Africa at Gwalior in February 2010.
He got there in the final over of India's innings, finishing unbeaten on 200 from 147 balls, with 25 fours and 3 sixes. India posted 401 for 3, itself only the third team total to pass 400 in the format at that point.
The achievement was read as a landmark for the format as much as for Tendulkar personally, proof that a score long considered essentially impossible in fifty-over cricket was there to be had. Only a small handful of players have reached it since, and none of them has rewritten the record books at the rate he did.
