Distinction

Villanova led North Carolina by four points with under five seconds left in the 2016 NCAA men's basketball championship game when the Tar Heels forward Marcus Paige hit an off-balance, double-clutch three-pointer to tie the score at 74-74. On any other night that is the shot everyone remembers.

Villanova had 4.7 seconds to answer after the inbound. The guard Ryan Arcidiacono raced the ball up the court and, with defenders converging, left it at the last instant for Kris Jenkins, trailing the play behind the three-point arc. Jenkins caught and shot in one movement, and it dropped through as the buzzer sounded.

The 77-74 win is the only time in the title game's history that a single shot has both won a national championship and beaten the buzzer. A tying miracle and a winning one, inside five seconds of each other.
