Klose's tournament goal tally
Brazil arrived at their home World Cup semi-final without the suspended Thiago Silva and, more critically, the injured Neymar, their talisman for the tournament. Germany scored through Thomas Müller inside eleven minutes from a poorly defended corner, an early warning that went unheeded.
What followed was one of the most extraordinary spells in World Cup history: Miroslav Klose (moving him past Ronaldo as the tournament's all-time top scorer), Toni Kroos twice, and Sami Khedira scored between the 23rd and 29th minutes, taking the score to 5-0 before the half-hour mark. André Schürrle added two more in the second half before Oscar's late consolation made the final score 7-1.
Brazilian fans inside the Mineirão stadium were reduced to tears and, in some cases, ironic applause for the visiting side by the closing stages. The result, nicknamed the Mineirazo in Brazil after the venue, remains the heaviest defeat suffered by a host nation in World Cup history and Germany's biggest ever win over Brazil.
