AC Milan led Liverpool 3-0 at half-time in the 2005 Champions League final, Paolo Maldini scoring inside the first minute and Hernán Crespo adding two more either side of the interval. In the studios at half-time the discussion had already moved on to how bad it might get.
Steven Gerrard headed in from a corner in the 54th minute. Six minutes later Vladimír Šmicér and a Xabi Alonso penalty rebound had levelled it at 3-3. Extra time settled nothing further, and the shootout turned on the goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, whose saves included the decisive one from Andriy Shevchenko, and Liverpool had a fifth European Cup.
It has been the Miracle of Istanbul ever since. Milan's collapse and Liverpool's recovery were equally total, and both of them happened inside the same 45 minutes of football.
