India, chasing Sri Lanka's total of 274 in the 2011 World Cup final at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, lost early wickets and needed a settling influence in the middle overs. Captain MS Dhoni made the bold decision to promote himself in the batting order ahead of the in-form Yuvraj Singh, a move questioned at the time but vindicated by the result.
Dhoni built a matchwinning innings of 91 not out, and with the scores tight in the closing overs, he ended the match with a six struck cleanly over long-on off Nuwan Kulasekara, finishing the game and the tournament with a single blow.
The win gave India their second World Cup, their first since 1983, and came on home soil in front of a Mumbai crowd that erupted as the ball cleared the boundary.
