Pelé's Third World Cup

Brazil's 1970 team, built around Pelé, Jairzinho, Gérson and Carlos Alberto, is still the side most often named as the finest to have played the sport. In the final against Italy at the Estadio Azteca, Pelé headed them in front in the 18th minute, his fourth goal of the tournament.

Italy equalised before half-time, and Brazil pulled away after it through Gérson and then Jairzinho, whose goal meant he had scored in every single match of the tournament. The fourth is the one still shown as a model of collective football: a move running through almost the entire team before Pelé's unhurried lay-off left captain Carlos Alberto to finish it first time from outside the box.

The 4-1 win gave Brazil a third World Cup, which under the rules of the day meant they kept the Jules Rimet trophy permanently, and gave Pelé a third winner's medal that no other player has matched. He was carried from the pitch by fans and teammates at the final whistle, in what proved to be his last World Cup appearance.
